Holiday Hike - A Walk through Time 12/28/2019

This event is no longer on sale.

Saturday December 28

10:00 AM  –  12:00 PM

Preregistration required.

Please meet in the Rowe Visitor Center Whittaker Library.  Dress to be comfortable outside hiking.

Celebrate the Winter Solstice with a walk through time. Our hike on the Geology Trail to Fox Rock will reveal evidence of the ancient sea and evidence of glaciers. We’ll wrap up at Abner Hollow Cabin as we remember how early settlers celebrated the holidays 220 years ago.

Fossils and glaciers and snow – oh my! This hike celebrates the annual Winter Solstice – 4.2 billion of them and counting!  We will begin in the library at the Visitors’ Center with a few questions: How do glaciers form? Was the Nature Center always at this latitude and longitude? How has the moon played a role in today’s hike?  Where else are there formations like Fox Rock on the property? Our hike to Avey’s Run will transport us to the Ordovician Period, when Cincinnati’s unique fossils were living organisms. The hike to Fox Rock will pass through old-growth forest and over glacial conglomerate deposited 300,000 years ago. We will complete our hike at the Abner Hollow Cabin, built in Adams County 220 years ago.

Members $5; nonmembers $10 (includes daily admission).
