Wildflower Photography: Spring Beauties and Camera Basics

This event is no longer on sale.

Saturday April 22

1:00 PM  –  3:00 PM

Preregistration is required for this program designed for adults.

Learn to blend the basics of nature photography and the natural history of local spring wildflowers in this hands-on class. Woodland wildflower photography can be challenging since the subjects are close to the ground and typically in low light. You’ll come to appreciate these precious beauties even more while you learn how to make your pictures even better.

This program will help you:

  • Learn basic photography principles and techniques

  • Add stories to your pictures as you learn about common spring wildflowers at the Nature Center and understand how and why our woodland wildflowers need to get an early jump on spring

  • Discover a way of looking at wildflowers so your pictures are even better

What to expect: This program will include a short introductory classroom session followed by hiking with experienced nature photographers and naturalists. Our time outside will be along trails where we will learn about woodland wildflowers and apply approaches for getting better pictures. Bring your camera equipment (lenses, tripod, and flash if you have those) or just your phone which will do fine. We will include techniques and apps for assisting with phone photography. The hiking will be on gentle trails, but conditions could be wet, so please be prepared. The program will run rain or shine.

Update: Our Wildflower Photography Program will proceed Saturday in the event of rainy weather. If the rain is gentle and sporadic, we may hike outside as planned. However, we'll also have indoor activities for learning about wildflowers and exposure, lighting, and composition using demonstrations. Depending on the weather, the hike could be optional and those electing to stay indoors will have opportunities to learn. Please come prepared for the possibility of some wet hiking if you choose to go out.

About the instructor:

The program will be led by Andy Fix, who is an active Nature Center volunteer and nature photographer. Andy is an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist and Certified Interpretive Guide. He leads regular bird walks at the Nature Center and is active in the Camera Club. Andy has a passion for sharing his love of nature with others, especially through teaching others about photography.

Program participants should meet in the Dornette Room at our Groesbeck Estate at our Rowe Woods location.
