Summer Teacher Retreat: Schoolyard Plants & Animals

This event is no longer on sale.

Thursday June 16

9:30 AM  –  3:30 PM

Preregistration is required online by Monday, June 13 at noon.

Green spaces all over the city have been used over the past year to give students (and teachers!) a boost to their emotional well-being, a change of scenery, and fresh air. Join us for a two-day workshop focused on how to use the resources you have while forming ideas for what you want. Workshop is most appropriate for teachers grades 2-5. Other grade levels and any subject areas welcome.

Graduate credit available through Ashland University. Payment for graduate credit will be processed through Ashland University at their rates during the workshop.  Please contact Melissa Sabo at msabo@cincynature.org with questions.

Registration covers two-day workshop:

June 16 from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm: Hands-on workshop at Cincinnati Nature Center (Rowe Woods) with keynote presentation by Michelle H. Martin, Beverly Cleary Endowed Professor, author, and co-founder of Read-O-Rama.

June 17 from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm: Tour Cincinnati-area schoolyards in urban and suburban settings to gather ideas for your outdoor teaching spaces. (BYO Transportation, or carpool with other teachers!)

Keynote speaker: Dr. Michelle Martin of Camp Read-a-Rama.

A native of South Carolina, Michelle H. Martin is the Beverly Cleary Endowed Professor for Children and Youth Services in the Information School at the University of Washington, where she has taught current and future librarians since 2016. From 2011-2016, she was the inaugural Augusta Baker Endowed Professor for Children and Youth Services in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina. She began hosting Read-a-Rama programs in 2001 as service learning for her students out of her love for both children’s literature and Girl Scouting. In 2008, during her 12 years as Clemson University English faculty, she met Dr. Washington, Clemson faculty in Teacher Education, and they co-taught a class on Ethnic Children’s Literature that resulted in the very first Camp Read-a-Rama. Martin is the author of Brown Gold: Milestones of African American Children’s Picture Books, 1845-2002.

Program participants meet at Krippendorf Lodge at our Rowe Woods location (4949 Tealtown Rd, Milford, OH 45150).

Tickets are $80 per teacher. Registration covers both dates: June 16 & 17 from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm daily. Program includes light lunch for both days.
