Preregistration required for program designed for adults.

From bites and stings to dry skin and scrapes, broadleaf plantain has been used to heal all manner of ailments for thousands of years. Join us to learn how to turn an often-overlooked garden weed into your new favorite cure-all salve.

In this class we’ll learn:

  • How to identify the two types of plantain most commonly found in our region
  • Plantain’s role as “nature’s bandage” from both an ecological angle as well as a human healing perspective
  • Humanity’s long history with “white man’s footprint”
  • Plantain’s other use as an edible plant
  • How to infuse oils for use in salve
  • General tips on making salve
  • Other potential ingredients for salve making at home
  • Tips on safe and sustainable foraging

What to expect: Through engaging, hands-on experience, participants will learn how to identify, sustainably forage, and process broadleaf plantain into a healing salve. The program will begin with a half-mile foraging hike, after which guests will head to the Creekside barn to learn more about the plant and participate in the salve-making process. Participants will go home with two 1-ounce tins of plantain salve and the knowledge to make more salve at home. This class will take place mostly outdoors, with the salve-making portion taking place inside the barn.

Registered program participants should meet at the Creekside Barn at Long Branch Farm & Trails (6926 Gaynor Rd, Goshen, OH 45122).

Member adult $20; nonmember adult $30 (includes daily admission).
