Planning Spring Native Gardens (Online)

This event is no longer on sale.

Sunday January 23

2:00 PM  –  3:00 PM

Preregistration required. This program is designed for adults.

Are you dreaming about adding new elements to your native garden? Now is the time to plan ahead. Denice Robertson will share personal strategies for spring plant selection to ensure success. Learn how to prepare your space by taking a current inventory and mapping out future plans in anticipation of vibrant spring blooms. Don’t forget trees and shrubs. We’ll review pruning techniques to add more light to your garden, and how to select those suitable for your space. Variation of color, height, and texture will add beauty for your enjoyment and diversity of plants for insects and wildlife.

You will learn how to:

  • Care for your garden in the winter; your garden provides food for birds and shelter for insects overwintering.

  • Understand your yard conditions: soil, sunlight, animals.

  • Plan for what to move in spring.

  • Identify gaps in bloom season.

About the Speaker:

Denice Robertson has a PhD in Ecology and is faculty at Northern Kentucky University. She is involved in research on prairie restoration specifically on increasing the success of milkweed. In addition, Denice owns Pollinator Plant Design which is a garden design company focused on creating gardens using native plants that enhance the natural habitat and provide food, shelter, and host plants for pollinators. She has experience dealing with poor drainage, creating a pollinator paradise in a shady yard, and working with areas that contain multiple conditions. She focuses on creating a habitat that works with existing conditions as there are many native plants to enrich any area regardless of the amount of light or water.
