Native Plants 101 (Online, Self-paced)

Preregistration is required by March 8 for this series of programs designed for adults and interested teens 13 years and older. 

Bring life into your outdoor space while helping the natural world! In this practical, self-paced, online course, you’ll discover the human and ecological benefits of planting native, learn about powerhouse native plants, and create a garden plan that fits your outdoor space (and personality!). From site assessment to plant choice and maintenance, this course will give you the tools you need to get started with native gardening in your backyard or community.  

Enrollment materials, including all links to access the course, will be sent to registrants the week prior to the start of the course. For more information, contact onlinelearning@cincynature.org.  

A computer or tablet with internet access is required to complete the course.  

Course topics include:  

  • Definition of “native plants” and other key terms 
  • Human and ecological benefits of planting native 
  • Site assessment for creating a native garden 
  • “Powerhouse” native plants 
  • Creating a plant list 
  • Navigating the nursery 
  • Starting and planting a plot 
  • Garden design basics 
  • Seasonal care and maintenance 
  • Inspirational case studies  

This five-week, 10-hour course includes:  

  • Videos  
  • Readings  
  • Interactive Learning Tools 
  • Course Forum 
  • Optional Live Discussion Sessions 
  • Downloadable Garden Planning Template  

Learners can expect to spend between 1.5-2 hours per week on coursework.  

Optional live discussion sessions will take place on:  

  • Monday, March 13 from 6:30-7:30 pm 
  • Wednesday, March 22 from 6:30-7:30 pm 
  • Wednesday, April 5 from 6:30-7:30 pm 

Members $40; nonmembers $45.

Cancellation Policy: Please note that cancellations must be made at least two weeks in advance of the first series date. No refunds or transfers of fees will occur if the request is made less than two weeks prior to the event start. All programs continue, rain or shine. In the event that Cincinnati Nature Center cancels a program, full refunds will be issued.
 
Program Policy: Cincinnati Nature Center may update the status or format of programs based on conditions at the time of the program.
