Cincinnati Nature Center’s Long Branch Farm & Trails, once a livestock-centric educational farm (1972-2005), has been reimagined as the Nature Center’s native plant-focused expression of inspiring conservation. This is a two-part tour geared toward the homeowner interested in native gardening and restorative landscaping. We’ll provide you with exclusive access to areas that are not open to the public for a behind-the-scenes look into what’s been developing and what’s to come at Long Branch Farm & Trails.

During the first part of the guided tour, you’ll explore the native plant propagation facility where native plants, shrubs, and trees are grown for habitat restoration projects on Nature Center lands as well as to be sold to the general public. In this portion of the tour, you’ll:

  • See the potting shed and production hoop houses where more than 100 species of native plants are grown.

  • Glean ideas for the home landscape including new plants to acquire for your yard, practices, and propagation tips.

  • Tour the developing shade garden as well as hear about future plans for the seed processing barn.

The second part of the tour centers on the native edible plant plots during which we’ll provide you with:

  • An overview of how the polyculture (growing many species together) plots of native perennial plants serve to celebrate hyper-local food through harvesting, cooking, education, and events.

  • Tips on incorporating native edible trees, shrubs, and plants into your home landscape through the lens of a “good for you, good for wildlife” approach.

  • Tips on balancing food for wildlife with human food.

  • An opportunity to see productive, full size native edible plants including elderberry, American persimmon, American wild plum, black walnut, native passionfruit, black chokeberry, serviceberry, pawpaw, ancient corn, Jerusalem artichokes, wild raspberry, sochan, and many more species.

  • Tips on laying out your own polyculture plot and bringing old fields or scrubby woods into native food production.

Native plant swag including seeds and/or plants will be provided as part of the tour.

Where does this program meet?

  • Nature Center staff will greet you at the main entrance to Long Branch Farm & Trails (6926 Gaynor Rd., Goshen, OH 45122) and direct you to the Native Plant Nursery (Farmside).
