Preregistration is required for all participants. This program is designed for adults or interested youth ages 12 and up with an adult/caregiver.
Not only will this hands-on make and take persimmon jam experience allow you to create unique, soulful holiday gifts, it’s also a give back conservation experience. Working in community, you’ll help process whole American persimmons that were harvested and frozen at peak ripeness from our native food plots at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location. We’ll transform some of these bright orange, nutritious fruits into persimmon jam while we find out why it’s called “fruit of the gods.”
While we work, we’ll provide you with some fun conversational fodder for the holiday table and answer your persimmon questions while enjoying each other’s company.
Each registration Includes three canned and finished 4 fluid ounce jars of persimmon jam, perfect for unique holiday gift giving. Each jar will be tastefully labeled with a product story and brief “conservation in a jar” message.
This program meets in the catering kitchen of Krippendorf Lodge (entrance on the loop driveway side of the Krippendorf Lodge) at our Rowe Woods location.
What are the ingredients in this persimmon jam?
Our effort is always to let the key ingredient shine; this jam only contains American persimmon pulp, sugar, and lemon. (Persimmon pulp contains pectin so will gel into jam with no additional pectin required.)
Can I purchase additional persimmon jam?
At the close of the program, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase additional jars of persimmon jam at $6 per jar.
How should I dress?
Wear “ok to get dirty” clothes as we’ll be working with food. Wear sturdy shoes as we’ll be standing for much of the time (chairs available).
Should I take Covid precautions?
Mask wearing is voluntary but bear in mind we’ll have a group of 10-12 people in an enclosed catering kitchen space.
What does American persimmon taste like?
The flavor of true American persimmon is mild, rich, and sweet. Many people describe the taste of persimmon as honey-like or caramel with hints of tangerine.

Pet Policy for Programs/Events: For the comfort and safety of all guests, no pets are allowed at programs or events. Service animals specifically trained to aid a person with a disability are welcome. Therapy animals, whose function is to provide comfort or emotional support, do not qualify as service animals. Cancellation Policy: Please note that cancellations must be made at least two weeks in advance of the event. No refunds or transfers of fees will occur if the request is made less than two weeks prior to the event. All programs continue, rain or shine. In the event that Cincinnati Nature Center cancels a program, full refunds will be issued.
Covid-19 Policies: Cincinnati Nature Center will run advertised programs using consideration of recommendations made by the CDC and local health agencies. Current Covid-19 protocols can be found online on our website. Cincinnati Nature Center may update the status or format of programs and events based on Covid-19 conditions at the time of the program.
Media Release: All participants (18 and older) associated with this transaction grant permission to Cincinnati Nature Center to utilize images, likenesses, actions, or statements in any form taken during a visit to the Nature Center, Nature Center sponsored event, or virtual presentation for the purpose of promoting the Nature Center in perpetuity.
