How Do Birds Survive Winter? (Online)

This event is no longer on sale.

Sunday January 9

2:00 PM  –  3:00 PM

Preregistration is required. This program is designed for adults.

To survive winter, our local feathered friends get really creative. Andy Fix, a longtime Cincinnati Nature Center member, photographer, and naturalist will share personal stories and photographs from his years of astute observations of bird behaviors. Winter can be harsh and scarcity of food can cause birds to rely on alternative foraging techniques, such as creating “bird gangs” to safely find reliable food sources. Learn how a small chickadee hardly weighing more than a tube of lip gloss can tough out the cold temperatures.

You will learn:

  • Winter survival strategies used by different groups of birds.

  • How birds seek water and shelter in the winter.

  • How you can help.

About the Speaker:

Andy Fix has been an avid birder since the late 1960s when he started learning about our feathered friends and the many things they do. As a naturalist, he combines a lifetime of avian observation with a passion for photography to better understand bird populations, movement, and survival. Andy enjoys sharing his field experiences and bringing interesting aspects of bird life into perspective for everyone to enjoy.
