Grow Your Own Pawpaw Trees: A Hands-On How To Class

This event is no longer on sale.

Saturday May 27

2:00 PM  –  4:00 PM

Preregistration required for this program geared toward adults

We can raise pawpaw trees that benefit both humans and wildlife by understanding how pawpaw trees came about and how they fit into natural systems. Drawing from history, botany, and evolution, we’ll better understand how to choose planting sites, grow a pawpaw tree from a seed, promote pollination, protect fruit from raccoons, harvest and process fruit, and more. Whether you’re growing pawpaw trees in your yard, wondering why there’s no fruit in your woodland pawpaw patch, or trying to raise zebra swallowtail butterflies, this class is for you.

What to expect: This class takes place outside and/or in an unheated barn. Weather and stream levels permitting, we’ll head “way down yonder” to the tended wild pawpaw patch (total distance not more than 1 to 1 ½ miles). We will be hiking on and off trail and crossing a creek. We’ll also see young pawpaw trees planted in orchard spacing in the native edible food plot. Dress for the weather.

About the instructor: A 25+ year veteran of Cincinnati Nature Center (CNC), Jason Neumann currently serves as public programs manager, crafting experiences that immerse visitors in nature and leading interpretive trainings. He works towards translating CNC’s “plant native” initiative into visitor engagement opportunities and has a special interest in connecting people to nature through food. Growing up on a small farm sparked his deep interest in agriculture which was fanned to flame through a BS degree in Crop and Soil Sciences (Michigan State University), and later a graduate certificate in Agroforestry (University of Missouri – Columbia). Drawing from the perspective of a farmer/naturalist, he seeks to work with nature whether in his suburban backyard operation called Someday Farm, the CNC Edible Plants and Foraging Group (founded in 2013) or managing the native perennial polyculture plots and native 2-acre pawpaw grove at Long Branch Farm & Trails. Jason is on the board of the Ohio Pawpaw Growers Association.

Registered program participants should meet at the white Creekside Barn at Long Branch Farm & Trails (6926 Gaynor Road, Goshen, OH 45122).

Member adult $12; nonmember adult $22 (includes daily admission).
