Get a Muddler and Forage a Cocktail

This event is no longer on sale.

Wednesday June 7

7:00 PM  –  8:30 PM

Preregistration required. This is an adult class offering suitable for ages 21+.

Muddling is a process of gently mashing herbs, fruit, and/or spices for cocktails. A muddler is a pestle-like tool used to release the essence from fresh ingredients, adding complexity to your drinks.

Take home a handmade one-of-a-kind “tornado” muddler. Our forager friend and wood turner Lisa Hildebrandt made the muddlers from a 100-year-old black walnut tree that fell at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location during the July 2022 tornado. Lisa will share the process of how she transformed a downed tree into muddlers as well as how to care for your new kitchen tool.

We’ll walk out to the Pollinator Garden (1/2-mile round trip) to harvest wild bergamot in its prime and have a look at other several other overlooked edible species in the Pollinator Garden.

We’ll explain the nuances of how to use your new muddler, including how to hit the muddling “Goldilocks zone,” assuring flavor is released but herbs aren’t pulverized and unattractive.

After a brief explanation, you’ll try out your new muddler and make your own Wild Bergamot Mojito (rum-based cocktail) which you can enjoy with a sampling of our foraged light bites.

Registered program participants should meet at Krippendorf Lodge located at our Rowe Woods location. We'll meet on the terrace (a covered outdoor seating area) of Krippendorf Lodge.

What to expect: We'll be hiking about ½ mile from Krippendorf Lodge to the Pollinator Garden, then return. You may opt out of the hike. Dress for the weather.

Members $30; nonmembers $40 (include daily admission).
