Your yard can become a much-needed natural space for wildlife—and a safe resting spot for migrating animals. From starting a successful native garden to becoming a sanctuary for native pollinators, birds, and other wildlife, we will cover how to plan for a native garden and select the right plant for the right space.

In the class we will cover:

  • Why plant choices matter to native wildlife
  • Basic advice for making a diverse, attractive native garden to welcome wildlife
  • Suggestions on preparing for your future garden
  • How to assess the conditions (sunlight, soil, and water) on your property
  • Suggestions for our top native species for gardens
  • Garden layout tips, factoring in height, bloom time and color, texture, adult plant size, etc.
  • Tips for helping your new plants survive the first year. We’ll touch on dealing with deer and rabbits.

What to expect:

  • Through engaging, hands-on activities, participants will create mock gardens by selecting native plants for different yard-types considering height, bloom time and color, texture, adult plant size to make a diverse garden landscape that is welcome for wildlife.
  • We will tour some gardens on our property.
  • Walking distance will be approximately a half mile on flat trails.

Program participants should meet at the Map Kiosk outside of Rowe Visitor Center at our Rowe Woods location.

Members $10; nonmembers $20 (includes daily admission).
