Handmade is heARTfelt! Great for families, enjoy creating with your out-of-town, holiday guests. Make a special gift or keepsake!

Meet local Ceramic Artist, Bonnie Mitchell during the Walk-in-the-Woods exhibition and get a chance to work with her while learning how to carve your own tile! During this special hands-on workshop, you’ll have 45 minutes to work with Bonnie Mitchell to sgraffito, a decorative technique, by drawing your own image into a damp clay tile.

About the Artist: This hands-on workshop will be led by Bonnie Mitchell a local, professional artist who creates one-of-a-kind artworks in her Milford studio. She creates beautifully striking, black and white sgraffito pottery that can be used for everyday purposes or just to add personal imagery to your home or office. You will be able to see a selection of her bee and coneflower pottery in the Nature Shop and during the Walk in the Woods exhibit.

What to expect: This workshop will focus on the sgraffito technique used by area nineteenth century potters to make expressive designs in their folk-art pottery. Sgraffito means to “scratch” and workshop participants will draw a design of their choosing into a damp clay slab, and then carve out layers of the clay to make their image more purposeful. You can choose traditional black and white designs or create your own design for a special gift. After the workshop concludes, Bonnie Mitchell will add the final glaze and kiln-fire your tile. Finished tiles will be returned to the Cincinnati Nature Center Nature Shop at a later date. Participants will be notified by email when tiles are available to pick up, just in time to show off or give to a special person during the holidays.
